FAQ
Transporting gametes and embryos is a delicate process, often raising questions. Find answers to the most frequently asked questions here. If needed, our team is available to assist you.
How to get a personalized quote ?
If your transport involves the Île-de-France region, the majority of laboratories are listed in the transport simulator. For other destinations, you can check the "other" box in the simulator and indicate the city and the country. You can also use the contact form or send an email to contact@fivdrop.com, precising the cities and countries of the releising and receiving clinics. Our team will get back to you as soon as possible.
Concretely, how are my straws transported?
On the morning of transport, the carrier goes before the departure lab equipped with the cold dry shipper. A biologist checks the temperature and loads the straw(s). The carier double checks the straws and the container is sealed. The carrier transports the container to the destination by road, train, or plane, depending on the distance. The container remains in his possession throughout the transport. In the vehicle, it is securely fastened and kept upright. A biologist from our team supervises the transport while maintaining contact with the carrier. Once arrived at the destination, the notified healthcare professional receives the container, checks its temperature, removes the seal, and retrieves the straw(s). You receive a final report of the journey indicating the temperature chart throughout the transport. Your cells have arrived without the slightest alteration, and you are ready to continue your care.
Why should I choose FIV-DROP to ensure my transport?
Transporting frozen cells at -196 degrees °C is a dangerous and risky task. The temperature difference increases the cell destruction risk. Entrusting your cells to FIV-DROP guarantees you optimal care, saves you time and also reduces your mental burden. Don't let this touchy step jeopardize your success rate in ART and entrust this task to professionals.
Does FIV-DROP save me time?
Of course YES! First, our team will contact the clinics on your behalf to arrange a delivery date. You simply need to point out the date of your treatment, and we will schedule the transfer beforehand. We will prepare the documents for you. On the day of delivery, you won't have to do anything, whereas if you do the delivery yourself, it will take you at least half a day.
How can I be sure that transport has not damaged my cells?
The only parameter that can alter the frozen cells is temperature. Maintaining it at -196 °C is absolutely necessary. Any variation in temperature exposes the cells to destruction, thus significantly compromising the success rate in ART. We use the latest generation of dry shipper specifically designed for human cells. We also use a temperature monitoring device to record the temperature throughout the transport. As such, FIV-DROP is the safest way to transport human cells.
Are there any special requirements for my transport abroad?
YES, regarding human tissue, crossing the French border (for both import and export) is regulated by the Agence de Biomedicine (ABM). Therefore, a special authorization is required before transporting cells from/to France. To do so, you must ask the lab where your cells are stored to complete the dedicated form, available on the ABM website. Once you get the authorization (usually within 2 months), FIV-DROP will organize the transport for you.
How does the air transportation take place?
The carrier travels exclusively for your transport. He has received a strict training on carry conditions. The sealed container remains in the dedicated travel bag from the departure laboratory to the arrival laboratory. It is carried by hand or in a backpack, and when the carrier sits down, the container remains placed on the floor between their legs, in an upright position. The temperature probe remains in place throughout the transport. The FIV-DROP team is in direct contact with airports and airlines security services to fast track through airport security and avoid the X-rays exposure.
What is the transport voucher?
This is a summary document containing information related to the transport: the patient's name, the date of transport, the number of straws, the releising and receiving clinics with the managers, and the name of the carrier. This document must be signed by the patient before transport.
What is the final report?
The final report is a summary document of that includes the date of transport, the number of straws, the names of the biologists who handles the container in both clinics, the starting and finishing temperatures, and the temperature chart. This report is emailed to you when the straws arrive at their destination.
Can I do the transport by myself ?
Indeed, you can carry your own cells but it will pose a risk and take time. First of all you will have to contact both clinics to arrange a date. You will then have to get a container of liquid nitrogen: borrow from the lab or rent from a pharmacy (be careful, very few pharmacies are able to provide one, so plan this in advance; moreover, the dry shipper is rented empty and needs to be loaded in liquid nitrogen several hours before use). The loan and rented containers are not equipped with a temperature check device, so you will never know if the temperature has been perfectly respected throughout the transport. FIV-DROP containers are equipped with this last generation device allowing to measure the temperature precisely and continuously. On the day of transport, you will have to go to the departure lab, wait for a biologist, fill out the required documents, receive the transport instructions, then go to the arrival lab on your own, wait again for a biologist, fill out the documents, wait for the biologist to retrieve the straws, take the empty container and bring it back to where you borrowed it. Depending on the distance, this process takes at least half a day.
What does FIV-DROP service cost?
The cost depends on the distance between both clinics. It is therefore essential to request a personalized quote by using the simulator or the contact form. For urgent requests (less than one month in France and less than three months abroad), an additional charge applies.
Is there any extra fee to expect?
The price declared on the quote includes the complete service: preparation of documents, transport using the temperature control equiped dry shipper, and the final report.
Is there a risk to exchange or loose my straws?
The FIV-DROP journey has been settled in details to guarrantee a perfect transfer and avoid any identity mistake or incident.
The releasing lab is responsible for the straw's identity check, and our carrier also double checks before sealing the tank. It will be unsealed by the professionnel healthcare who is in charge to receive the straws in the arriving lab.
Throughout the transit, the carrier's priority is to maintain the tank in vertical position. Nevertheless, in case of force majeure (road accident, flight turbulences etc), he won't be responsible for any temperature variation.
